Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal

Ponta Delgada is the largest city and the administrative capital of the Azores archipelago (part of Portugal). I only had one day to explore Ponta Delgada but here are the things I enjoyed the most during my visit:

1. São Miguel Palace: Start your day by visiting the São Miguel Palace, which houses the Azores Regional Government. The palace itself is an architectural gem, and the surrounding gardens are a nice place for a leisurely stroll.

2. Portas da Cidade: Next, head to the Portas da Cidade (City Gates), which is one of the most iconic landmarks in Ponta Delgada. These grand city gates are located in the historic center and are perfect for photo opportunities.

3. Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião: Explore the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, the main church in the city. It features impressive baroque architecture and beautiful azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles) on its facade.

4. Mercado da Graça: Visit Mercado da Graça, a local market where you can find a variety of fresh produce, regional products, and handicrafts. It's a great place to sample local delicacies and immerse yourself in the Azorean culture.

5. Parque António Borges: If you're a nature lover, take a relaxing walk through Parque António Borges, a tranquil public park with beautiful gardens and ponds. It's an ideal spot to enjoy some peace and quiet.

6. Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Azorean lunch at one of the local restaurants in the city. Look for dishes featuring fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and traditional Azorean recipes.

7. Sete Cidades: In the afternoon, take a half-day tour to Sete Cidades, a breathtaking volcanic crater lake located about 30 minutes outside of Ponta Delgada. The twin lakes, one blue and one green, surrounded by lush landscapes, are a must-see sight.

8. Caldeira Velha: On your way back from Sete Cidades, stop by Caldeira Velha, a natural hot springs area where you can take a relaxing bath in warm thermal waters amidst the Azorean rainforest.

Bonus tip: Take a look at the sidewalks as you walk around town. The unique and intricate artwork (that differs) on each street is amazing!

I thoroughly enjoyed my day in Ponta Delgada and plan to return someday to see the other sites on Sao Miguel Island and venture to the other islands in the archipelago. If you'd like to enjoy a day in the Azores, you can find plenty to do here.
