Corfu

The beautiful island of Corfu, Greece is quite popular with British and European tourists. You can find it on some cruise itineraries but unfortunately, it is often overlooked. I think that's a shame. Personally, I think the island is worth a bit of a detour to reach if you are in the area. It could be added to a trip to Croatia or Italy, and is just across the water from Albania.

I was only in Corfu Town but want to return to the island someday to see the rest of it. If you go, I'd suggest starting your day with a visit to the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the narrow streets, admire the Venetian architecture, and don't miss the Liston Promenade.

Next up, head to the iconic Spianada Square, one of the largest squares in Greece. It's a great spot to soak in the local atmosphere and maybe grab a coffee at one of the charming cafes.

For a touch of history, explore the Old and New Fortresses. The views from the top are breathtaking, offering a panorama of the island and the sea.

At lunchtime indulge in some authentic Greek cuisine at one of the local tavernas. Walking away from the main streets and squares, even just a block or two, will yield great results - a more "local" atmosphere in the restaurant and much better pricing.

After refueling, visit the Achilleion Palace, a stunning palace with beautiful gardens. It was built as a summer residence for the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria.

Find some time in the afternoon to visit Mon Repos. This gem should definitely be on your list - you may recognize some of the grounds from the TV series on ITV and PBS "The Durrells." This neoclassical villa is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is known for being the birthplace of the late Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. It offers a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into Corfu's aristocratic past. If you have an interest in history, nature, or just a desire to unwind in a picturesque setting, don't miss it.

Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, enjoy the shade of the trees, and explore the well-maintained pathways. The villa itself is a marvel, and the views overlooking the Ionian Sea are simply breathtaking.

Cap off your day with a visit to the Kanoni and Vlacherna Monastery. The view of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) and the distant monastery is postcard-perfect, especially during the golden hour.

This itinerary may include a lot but it'll give you a taste of Corfu's rich history, beautiful landscapes, and delicious food in just one day.
