Helsinki
A cruise last year took us to Helsinki. I knew little about the capital of Finland but once I started to look at the tour options and read about the sites around the city, I was so intrigued by the culture and lifestyle there, that I decided to really learn more about the entire country by becoming a certified Finland Travel Pro through Visit Finland.
I also wanted to learn why Finland was named the happiest country in the world for the fifth (now sixth) consecutive year in the annual United Nations report. It turns out it may not have a lot to do with the places to see and things to do on a visit to Finland, but more to do with the nature, food, sustainability, and lifestyle of the Finns. The good news is – you can get a taste of those things when you visit Helsinki. By visiting some or all of the following places, you’ll get a feel for how the locals approach the daily aspects of their lives. You may even pick up a few ideas to incorporate into your life to improve your personal happiness score.
To begin with, Helsinki is a walkable city, so you can explore many of these places on foot or utilize public transportation, such as trams or buses, to move around the city efficiently.
Here are several of the must-see attractions and activities that you shouldn't miss.
Senate Square (Senaatintori): Start your day at the magnificent Senate Square, the historical center of Helsinki. Admire the impressive neoclassical architecture, including the Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, and the University of Helsinki.
Market Square (Kauppatori): Head to the bustling Market Square located by the waterfront – open since 1889. Explore the vibrant market stalls offering fresh produce, local handicrafts, and souvenirs. Don't forget to try some Finnish delicacies, such as salmon soup or vendace (fried fish).
Suomenlinna Fortress: Take a ferry ride to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Suomenlinna, a sea fortress spread across several islands. Explore the fortifications, visit the museums, enjoy scenic walks, and learn about the fascinating history of this 18th-century fortress.
Helsinki Design District: Walk around the Design District, an area known for its creativity and design-oriented shops, galleries, and boutiques. Discover unique Finnish design products, fashion, and contemporary art.
Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church): Visit this extraordinary church carved into solid rock. The church's unique architecture and natural lighting make it a popular attraction. Check the schedule for organ concerts or other events taking place there.
Helsinki Central Railway Station: Marvel at the iconic Helsinki Central Railway Station, a stunning example of Finnish Art Nouveau architecture. The station is not only a transportation hub but also an architectural landmark worth exploring.
Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma: If you're interested in modern and contemporary art, visit the Kiasma museum. It features various exhibitions and installations showcasing Finnish and international contemporary art. Over 8,000 contemporary artists are represented and the building itself is a notable work of contemporary art.
Sibelius Monument: Pay a visit to the Sibelius Monument, dedicated to the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The abstract sculpture resembles organ pipes and is located in Sibelius Park. It’s a great place to walk, sit on one of the benches, and take in a moment of quiet.
If that wasn’t enough to do, you can also visit the beautifully designed Helsinki Central Library Oodi (the unofficial living room of Helsinki), see the renewed Helsinki Olympic Stadium, visit the Amos Rex Art Museum, or try a Finnish sauna experience. You’ll find Löyly, a unique sauna and restaurant, located in the Helsinki harbor overlooking the Baltic Sea. Check it out for yourself to see why Time Magazine named it one of the “World’s 100 Greatest Places.”
Depending on your interests and the amount of time you have, there are plenty of options to keep you entertained during a visit to Helsinki.
