Minneapolis -
Saint Paul
I've extended layovers at the Minneapolis - Saint Paul Airport on a couple of occasions to take advantage of the cool things to do near the airport (MSP). Instead of a couple short visits, you could easily combine the following into a very nice 3-day weekend. I highly recommend:
Mall of America - This is a massive shopping complex located near the airport with over 500 stores, an amusement park, an aquarium, and other attractions. You can take the light rail from the airport to get there.
Minnehaha Falls - This beautiful park is located just a few miles from the airport and features a 53-foot waterfall, hiking trails, and picnic areas.
The Minnesota Zoo - Located about 15 miles from the airport, the Minnesota Zoo has over 5,000 animals and a variety of exhibits and activities.
A walk or bike ride along the Mississippi River - The Mississippi River runs through the Twin Cities, and there are several parks and trails along the river that offer great views and outdoor activities.
Catch a Minnesota Twins game - Located less than 20 minutes from MSP, the Twins play at Target Field from early April through early October (into November if they make the playoffs). The stadium is located in the historic warehouse district of Minneapolis and was named the best baseball stadium experience in North America in 2010 by ESPN The Magazine.
Grab a Juicy Lucy for dinner - This Minneapolis-created burger can be found at several restaurants around the area, but my favorite is at the 5-8 Club - on the northwest side of the airport.
These are just a few of the many things you can do around the MSP Airport. Depending on your interests and the amount of time you have, there are plenty of options to keep you entertained and engaged during your layover or long weekend.
